Independent and Dependent Clause
1.Words, phrases and clauses
make up sentences.
2.Look for clauses
to know type of sentence.
3.A dependent (subordinate) clause
is part of a sentence; it cannot stand alone.
4.An independent clause
is a complete sentence; it can stand alone.

Two independent clauses joined together with the
conjunctions:

Compound Sentence
The dog barked and

Complex Sentence
One independent clause
and one dependent clause.
These
sentences use subordinating conjunctions to link ideas:

Complex Sentence
(When the dog barked), the cat ran away

Complex Sentence
Because she was sick, she stayed home,
She stayed home because she was sick.
